SIXTH GRADE CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
2011-2012
IIn the fall of 2011, St. Mary’s Episcopal School initiated its expansion of a Middle Division with the opening of 6th grade. Seventh and 8th grade will follow in 2012 and 2013, respectfully.
This will allow our school to offer a continuous grade span that begins with our early childhood programs through middle school. This continuous model will offer continuity from the youngest to oldest student in terms of curriculum, program, social and emotional skill development, leadership and service opportunities, building relationships and involvement with student/staff/families. This model allows for common expectations of students.
Research has found that continuous grade span schools:
- perform better and students out-perform their peers who are in separate middle schools
- have stronger student-teacher bonds
- have fewer discipline problems
- and produce higher achieving students than most separate middle schools
As a school, we have a responsibility to know the age and stage of our students in order to set the highest expectations for them in terms of curriculum and program as well as responsibilities and leadership skills.
