MUSIC/FINE ARTS
Involvement in music is thought to teach basic skills such as concentration, counting, listening, self-discipline and cooperation while also promoting understanding of language, improving the ability to recall information, fostering creativity, and creating an environment more conducive to learning in other areas.
There are many additional benefits training young children, as well as older children and teenagers, in music. Brain activity is increased which, in turn, strengthens spatial-temporal reasoning and skills in abstract reasoning (skills used in math and science). The brain learns to organize better and perform several tasks at the same time, by practicing the many facets involved in playing a musical instrument.
The many personal benefits achieved are confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of accomplishment. It shapes and molds the character with self-assurance and stability; and has the added bonus of public performance, which helps to conquer the fear of getting up in front of people. Furthermore, learning a musical instrument fosters good habits like focus, mental discipline, staying with a task until it is complete, and allows for the expression feelings.
St. Mary’s students actively participate in music classes twice weekly. During their musical studies, they experience rhythm, pitch, rhythm instruments, Orff instruments, elements of basic music theory, and a number of singing and movement activities. Students learn about orchestral families, cultural music, composers and their music, experience performance opportunities and have hands-on instrument experience. Students produce music with body, voice, and instruments and read basic music notations. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of music and musical styles and will perform in front of others.
St. Mary’s students are exposed to musical theory using the Orff Schulwerk method. Our music faculty is master level Orff certified and holds trainings from Trinity University, Southern Methodist and the University of Memphis. St. Mary’s performing group, Encore!, uses the Orff instruments to showcase their talent and provide community awareness for the school.
A combination of drama and musical talent takes place at each grade-level with every class performing an annual production and the entire school performing just prior to the holidays the worship service, “Nine Lessons and Carols”.
